Points of Interest (PoI's) or Places
In the world of mapping and geospatial technology, Points of Interest (PoIs) are specific locations that hold significance due to various reasons. These could be landmarks, businesses, tourist attractions, or even everyday spots like parks and cafes. For convenience, we call PoI’s “Places” in Proto.
Places are not just mere coordinates on a map; they represent places that have a story, a purpose, or a unique aspect that makes them stand out. On our App, Places are the focal points that users interact with, offering a deeper understanding and connection to the locations they map.
Why Places Matter?
- Richer Map Experience: Places contribute to a more comprehensive and informative map, turning a simple geographic representation into a detailed guide of an area.
- Community Engagement: By marking Places, users share their local knowledge and insights, fostering a sense of community and shared understanding.
- Personalized Mapping: Each user's interaction with Places adds a personal touch to the map, reflecting diverse perspectives and experiences.
- Resource for Various Needs: Places serve as valuable resources for travelers, locals, businesses, and planners, providing essential information that aids decision-making and exploration.
Check-In's
A Check-In is how you add to Places on Proto. It is a simple yet powerful way of contributing to the map. Check-in's have a few components:
- Address: Identify and record the location of the PoI. This could be an exact address or a description of the location.
- Tag: Assign a tag to the PoI. You can choose from a pre-existing list or create a custom tag that best describes the place.
- Reviews & Ratings: Add a personal touch by sharing details about what makes this PoI special. Your review can include observations, stories, or any relevant information that enhances the understanding of the place.
- Images: Visuals speak volumes. Attach images to your Check-In to give others a real sense of what the PoI is like.
- Metadata: Based on the kind of place you're adding, information tends to change. It could be anything from a quality assessment of the road you're adding in or accessibility information about a museum.
In the coming sections we will go through each in detail and explain how to ideally map them.
Relationship between Places and Check-In’s
Think of “Places” as a universal standard for information about real world locations. A “Check-In” is a way of adding or contributing data to this universal standard. Check-in components are organized to enable the verification and editing of data contributed by all users.
